Cora Thorson

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, May 24, 1985
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 86

Cora M. Hovey was born on May 12, 1899, to John and Mary (Kleve) Hovey on a farm near Elk Point, South Dakota. As a young girl she moved with her parents to a homestead 17 miles northwest of Philip. She grew up there and graduated from Philip High School in 1919. She taught school for one year in the East Lincoln School near her parents homestead.

Cora was united in marriage to Joseph Thorson on June 15, 1920, at her parents' homestead northwest of Philip. They farmed and ranched in the Grindstone area until retiring and moving into Philip in 1967. Her husband, Joseph, preceded her in death in 1970. She continued to make her home in Philip until moving to the Philip Nursing Home in May of 1982.

Survivors include three sons, Leonard Thorson of Cottonwood, Lauren Thorson of Cottonwood, and Corwin "Corky" Thorson of Philip; three daughters, Mildred (Robert) Radway of Milesville, Maxine (Loren) O'Reilly of Murdo, and Janice (Barton) Parsons of Milesville; 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Milton Hovey of Everett, Washington; one sister, Grace Bromaghim of St. Petersburg, Florida; very special friends, Clarence and Edna Buls of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cora was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, her parents, and one brother, Chester Hovey.
