Rosalie Stangle

of Scenic, South Dakota, died on Saturday, April 12, 2025
at her home in Scenic at the age of 84

Rosalie Ann Karp was born November 27, 1940, in New Underwood, South Dakota, to Edward and Anna (Nachtigal) Karp. She attended high school in New Underwood and St. Martins, graduating from St. Martins in 1959. After graduation, she attended Presentation College and Black Hills State College obtaining her teaching certifications. This began her lifelong career in education.

She was united in marriage to Leo Stangle on June 3, 1961, in New Underwood, and to this union were born four children; Michael Leo, Richard Allen, Allen Michael, and Lori Ann. They made their home east of Rapid City. They then moved to Lakeside, where Leo taught at the Deering School and Rosalie taught at Lakeside. They later moved to New Underwood, where Leo ran the Standard Oil Bulk Truck and Rosalie taught at the New Underwood school. They then moved to Scenic where they also owned and operated their own ranch raising cattle and sheep. In the early 80s, Leo started his own prairie dog control business and Rosalie helped him with that as well. She didn’t slow down and wasn’t afraid of hard work. For several years Leo and Rosalie flew south for the winter, enjoying time with her sisters. In June 2011, just two months before Leo’s passing, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a big dinner and dance.

Rosalie’s roots ran deep in the New Underwood community where she taught at the school for many years. She was a pillar of St. John’s Catholic Church in New Underwood. Her contributions to the community she loved didn’t go unnoticed and in 2017 she received The Catalyst Club Good Neighbor Award.

Faith and family were most important to Rosalie. Anyone who knew her, knew her love of Jesus. She spent many years chasing her children and grandchildren in all their activities; saying many rosaries while on the road. She enjoyed dancing, card games, helping with the Old Settlers Picnic, and hosting her famous 4th of July Party at her home in Scenic. The last 4 years of her life she bravely battled breast cancer and dementia with grit, grace and humor.

Her presence will be missed by her family, the badlands of Scenic and the community of New Underwood but we are forever grateful for the impact her love and faith had on all of us.

Survivors include her two sons Michael (Tanya) Stangle of Scenic, and Richard (Karlene) Stangle of Hermosa; one daughter Lori (Lee) Gossard of Wicksville; twelve grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother Kenny (Sharon) Karp of New Underwood, 3 sisters; Judy (Jim) Warren of Arizona, Jeanie McQuistion of Texas, and Theresa Moore of Nebraska, dear friends Judy Knuppe and Joleen McIlravy and a host of other relatives and friends.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents; her son Allen in 1999; her husband Leo in 2011; her brothers Don and Fred; and her sister Rita.
