Charmaine Stewart

of Hewitt, Texas formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, January 27, 2021
at the Senior Care Center of Hewitt at the age of 81

Charmaine Grace Marie Wheeler was born September 12, 1939 in New Underwood, South Dakota to George and Mary (Williams) Wheeler. She was named after one of her mother’s favorite songs, ‘Charmaine’ and her two grandmothers. Along with other Big Buffalo neighbor kids, Charmaine was active in 4-H showing cattle. She attended all 12 years of school at Kadoka and remained a loyal Kadoka Kougar fan all her life. She also attended one year of college at Huron.

Charmaine was united in marriage to Dugan Stewart on October 11, 1958. After working on ranches near White River and Murdo, and also for the Elmer Hanson family near Kadoka, Dugan and Charmaine made their home at the Ferguson Rafter Cross Ranch north of Philip for 48 years. Charmaine and Dugan both enjoyed raising cattle, and she particularly loved their Limousine herd. She traveled to many cattle sales and shows with Dugan whenever she could. Charmaine was also active with the Altar Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milesville. Dugan retired in 2009 and they moved to Philip. After Dugan passed away, she lived at the Silver Leaf Assisted Living before moving to Texas in 2019.

Survivors include three children Richard Stewart and his wife Diana of Philip, Tina and her husband James Lynn of Moody, Texas, and Steven Stewart of Estelline; three grandchildren Kellie (Mark) Halvorson, Beau (Jamie) Stewart, Jeb (Gabby) Stewart; six great-grandchildren; one brother Justin Wheeler and his wife Joyce of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Charmaine was preceded in death by her husband Dugan, son Vincent Stewart, and both her and Dugan’s parents.

It is so hard to lose a friend and to lose a close and special friend is harder yet. For all the years we were neighbors and became close friends I will be forever thankful. We shared good times and bad times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you for the loss of a mom trumps the loss of a friend anytime. Hang on to the good times, let go of the hard times, and know that she is enjoying all that heaven has to offer. I am so glad God put her in my life. Rest in Peace Charmaine!

Charmaine was such a hostess! My guys enjoyed their branding experiences at Dugan and Charmaine's! They were good neighbors in Philip too, when the boys were there going to school. Salt of the Earth people. We are so sorry to hear of this loss. Bless her memory. Comforting thoughts are sent to her family.
