Victoria Ann "Vickie" Simon was born December 26, 1954, in Hoven, South Dakota to Vic and Ann (Deis) Simon, the oldest of five children. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Hoven High School in 1973, and she attended Presentation College in 1975.
Vickie was united in marriage to Neal Petersen on August 19, 1974, in Hoven, and to this union Kim and Jason were born.
After graduating from college, they moved to Wagner, South Dakota where Neal started his career, and Vickie worked for Francis Doom at Wagner Construction and Wagner Building Supply as a bookkeeper. That was the best job, and she had the best boss anyone could ever ask for. Due to job cuts in the school system they moved to Groton, South Dakota for one year. Then both had opportunities open in Philip.
Vickie started working for Scotchman Industries in September 1979 and continued working there until March 2002. She had a wonderful chance to learn so much and work in a lot of different departments.
Her passion was always to own her own businesses and make a living doing that. That dream was realized in Philip, and she was grateful for the community support and hoped that she treated every customer as she would want to be treated. Vickie is especially proud of learning how to do taxes by educating herself on whatever situation came up and taking continuing education courses.
Vickie died Wednesday morning, January 19, after a courageous 18-month battle with peritoneal cancer.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Neal Petersen of Philip; daughter Kim Petersen and son Jason (Marlis) Petersen both of Philip; grandchildren: Allison Stahl Hughes, Jenna Petersen, Cohen Reckling, Aiden Petersen, and Adalee Petersen, all of Philip; siblings: Les (Donna) Simon of Aberdeen, Lisa (Al) Reuer of Rapid City, Val Parrett of Fargo, ND, and Karen (Fred) Simon of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

I never met Vickie in person but I spoke with her many times on the phone about primary peritoneal cancer. My mom also suffered from the same affliction and Vickie was incredibly helpful and positive spirited as we all went through the difficult journey with my mom. While at the cancer clinic in Reno, my mom and dad both had the pleasure of meeting Vickie in person and my mom in particular talked about how much of a fighter Vickie was and the inspiration of her spirit. Sadly, my mom lost the fight in June of last year but I am encouraged that she now has another friend by her side -- up there, out there, wherever "there" is when we all pass on. I am so thankful for Vickie's kindness and generosity and I wish all of Vickie's family and friends endless strength as they work through this difficult time.
