In memory of

Fredy Peters

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, January 27, 2023 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 90

Fredy Ray Peters was born November 4, 1932, in Chamberlain, South Dakota, the 7th of 11 children born to Fred and Ethel (Dobbin) Peters. He grew up on the family farm north of Okaton and received his education at the Horseshoe Bend School. After his schooling he worked for various ranchers in the area, before moving to Maryland with his sister Grace, where he worked at a Safeway Store.

In September 1954, he moved back to Kadoka and lived with his brother Clyde and his family, as Clyde had just taken over the Standard Station along Old Highway 16. Fredy worked for his brother there until January 1, 1957, when he took over the station.

Fredy was united in marriage to Marjorie Conlee on August 21, 1957, in Pierre, South Dakota. After their marriage, Fredy continued to work at the service station and continued to work after the new station was built in August of 1969.

In May of 1971, Fredy and Marjie opened their own station, Southside Service, in Belvidere. They continued to own and operate that station until retiring in 2007.

Fredy loved to fish, especially bass fish. He was a very talented clock repairman, and enjoyed mowing on his lawn tractor.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjie; two sons Randy Peters of Midland, and Brent Peters of Kadoka; three grandchildren Tyrell Cain, Trisha (Al) Camberos, and Taylor (Paul) Marquez; six great-grandchildren Hayden, Macie, Cole, Aliyah, Logan, and Owen; one brother Allen “Chip” Peters and his wife Phyliss of Pierre; one sister Ethel “Blouie” Oldenkamp of Rapid City; and two sisters-in-law Freda Peters of Pierre, and Sharon Peters of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Fredy was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings Wilma (“Hook”) Uhlir, Clyde (“Shorty”) Peters, Betty (Lloyd) Borders, Grace (“Buzz”) Carney, Olin Peters, Dale Peters, Alvin “Butch” (Janet) Peters, a brother Fred in infancy; and a brother-in-law Elmer Oldenkamp.

Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at the Kadoka Bible Church in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, at the Kadoka Bible Church, with Pastor Jesse Taylor officiating.

Interment will be at the Kadoka Cemetery.

Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 387, Kadoka, SD 57543.

  • I often thought of Fredy after we left the ranch so many years ago. The boys and I would come to Belvidere and Fredy would always give them popcicles and we would sit on the freezer and visit. We fished a few times together and also hunted pheasants. I still have a photo of the boys holding Fredys pheasants. I have missed those freezer conversations after moving out of South Dakota.
